In a piece published by Foreign Affairs with Tymofii Brik, Professor Jennifer Brick Murtazashvili explains the paradox of how Ukraine strengthened its state by decentralizing power.

“The brave decision to decentralize power has been key to Ukraine’s battlefield success,” says Murtazashvili. “Ukrainians are not just fighting for democracy and against Russia, they are fighting to defend their communities and local authorities that they have elected."

Murtazashvili is the Founding Director of the Center for Governance and Markets and Associate Professor at GSPIA. Her research explores bottom-up perspectives on security, governance, and political economy with a primary focus on Central Asia, South Asia, and the former Soviet Union.
