Jonathan A. Shine

PhD Student

Col. Jonathan Shine is currently an Assistant Professor of Strategy at the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, PA, where he teaches courses on strategy and national security policy. In addition, he serves as Deputy Chair of the Department of National Security and Strategy.

Jon earned his commission in 1998 after graduating from Princeton University’s Army ROTC program. He has served in a variety of command and staff positions in the Republic of Korea and across the US. His combat deployments include three tours in Iraq (including the initial invasion of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003) and one deployment to Zabul Province, Afghanistan. Other career highlights include command of a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Battery and a M109A6 Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzer Battalion. He participated in several exercises in Europe and Africa as a part of the US Africa Command’s Regionally Aligned Force. From 2007-2009, COL Shine served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Jon is a graduate of Princeton University (BA in Political Economics) and Georgetown University (Master in Public Policy Administration). He is currently a PhD Candidate at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs in the University of Pittsburgh, where his research focuses on the effect of strategic education on the performance of senior military officers.
